2.  NYSAS Gold Metal Award and Student Awards:

(1)
NYSAS Gold Metal Award:  The New York section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy seeks nominations for the Gold Medal award and makes a selection in January each year. This coveted award was established in 1952 to recognize outstanding contributions to the field of Applied Spectroscopy.  The Gold Medal will be presented at a special award symposium, arranged in honor of the awardee, at the Eastern Analytical Symposium in Somerset, New Jersey.

The 2008 NYSAS Gold Metal Award Winner is Dr. John Rabolt, Professor and Chair Department of Materials Science and Engineering University of Delaware.

(2)
NYSAS Student Awards: The New York section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy selects outstanding candidates for the Undergraduate and Graduate Student Award winners in March for each year.

The 2008 NYSAS Graduate Student Award winner is Lisa J. Carlson, University of Rochester.

The 2008 NYSAS Undergraduate Award winners is Miriam R. Greenstein, Vassar College, NJ.

4.  Website: www.nysas.org.

NYSAS has well maintained a website to advocate the mission of the section, to reach out our members, and most important to house and disseminate meeting information.  In addition to the efforts that we have made such as adding business meeting minutes, a description of officer roles & responsibilities, and a recognition section, in this year, we collected suggestions from members and officers, added pictures from NYSAS activities, and timely displayed coming meeting and speaker information.

To enhance the NYSAS website, we are evaluating a new web building tool because of the flexibility limitation of current one.  We also planned to have the webmaster demonstrate the web and function to the committee and members at a monthly meeting for further comment and suggestions.

We timely resolved the problem that someone was using our NYSAS emailing list and address for spam.  As a remediation, we modified our web pages, live links, and contact information, and informed the members for what we've done to fit the problem.  We are also looking into the possibility of starting a password protected discussion group to further communications within NYSAS.

NYSAS is evaluating the use of Web hosted meetings to increase attendance at monthly meetings.  This is particularly important for our section given the large area that NYSAS serves along with rising gas prices and higher demands at work and home.   Removing some of the travel involved in attending meetings may help us grow our local organization and serve our members better.

5.  NYSAS Business Activities

(1)
Officer Business meetings are held once per month.  Executive Committee meetings are called by the Chair as needed to discuss NYSAS business issued, status, and plans for coming activities.  Meeting minutes are found on the www. nysas.org

(2)
A marketing brochure was developed to solicit new membership into our local section.  This brochure has been distributed at each NYSAS scientific meeting through the year as well at the 2006 EAS and FACSS meetings.

(3)
Efforts have been made to solicit donations from vendors to support NYSAS activities or sponsor a student award or the food for a monthly meeting.  Our website has listed a number of vendors who make annual donations and offered links to these vendors’ website.  .

(4)
A new NYSAS crystal pyramid was designed as a gift to appreciate each speaker who presented at NYSAS monthly scientific meeting.  Several speakers have received this gift this year and been very pleased.

(5)
Officers election for 2008-2009 has been completed in June based on NYSAS bylaw.
