Dept of Chemistry and Life Science, US Military Academy, West Point, NY

Primary responsibility of the position is to serve in the capacity of Laboratory Technician and execute the laboratory program for the Elective Chemistry courses. Elective courses include but are not limited to the following: Organic Chemistry, Quantitative Analysis, Instrumental Analysis, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, and Cadet Individual Research projects (directed by faculty).

Under the direction of faculty, carry out the execution the laboratory program for the Elective Chemistry courses.
Using the course outlines and laboratory schedules, plans,coordinates and sets up equipment for labs and demonstrations.
Prepares chemical solutions for labs and demonstrations.
Checks solution concentrations using instrumental and chemical means.
Reviews all laboratory materials (e.g., lab objectives, lessons, texts, previous notes, etc.) to familiarize self with approach, methods, and procedures to use in setting up lab/demonstrations.
Tries out labs/demonstrations prior to actual lab period to insure that instruments, equipment and chemicals utilized are functional.
Assist instructors during laboratory periods by providing technical advice and assistance to the cadets on proper equipment operation, laboratory techniques and safe practices.
The equipment utilized in the various lab/demonstrations consists of Gas Chromatographs, Infrared Spectrometers, NMR Spectrometers, UV/Visible Spectrometers, Refractometers, Polarimeters, Electrophoresis, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimeters and pH meters.
Responsible for service and maintenance of laboratory equipment related to the Elective Chemistry courses.
Maintains necessary inventory of glassware, chemicals, laboratory equipment and instrumentation. Assists in forecasting requirements for major equipment purchases and replacements. Develops purchase specifications and economic justification for equipment which, is submitted to the department.
Coordinates installation of new equipment to include learning the operation and basic maintenance procedures developing procedures for user operations and training other personnel in the operation and basic maintenance procedures developing procedures for user operation.
